A productive year, with above average yields thanks to a wet winter followed by excellent spring weather. Summertime temperatures were rather mild, with very few heat spikes to speak of. The cooler than average summer meant that the vines took their time ripening the larger crop, with harvest starting slightly later than usual. The mild season and large crop load translated into wines that are not as dark and powerful as past vintages, but extremely beautiful and fresh. No jamminess or overripe character in 2005, and generally the wines show slightly lower alcohols. They have aged very well but will peak sooner than other vintages.
